Bold brows are in! Sure, you could stack your getting-ready routine with all kinds of cosmetic brow helpers, like pencil, powder, and gel. But these steps take lots of time and effort.

You may be one of those people who want to get Microblading done but are scared. Maybe you’re not in a financial place to get Microblading done. Or, maybe you don’t want something that lasts as long as Microblading, but still, do not want to have to fill in your eyebrows every single day. If this is the case, eyebrow tinting might be the perfect treatment for you.

Eyebrow tinting, on the other hand, can give modest eyebrows a fresh, bold look that lasts for several weeks. Not only that, it’s a relatively low-risk, low-cost salon procedure that cuts down on the need for daily makeup.

If your natural brows are a light color or are thinning, chances are you’ve wondered how to make them pop.

Or perhaps you have a lovely new hair color on top, but your brows are still showing telltale grays. Or maybe you love your current brows but want to reduce your makeup and grooming time in the mornings.

Eyebrow tinting may be the answer.

What Is Eyebrow Tinting?

Eyebrow tinting is the process of applying dye/pigment to the eyebrow area in order to tint it to the desired shade. Unlike Microblading, there is no cutting into the skin and it is virtually noninvasive. Eyebrow tinting is more like coloring your hair.

A pigment is applied to the eyebrow area and left on for 15 minutes. When wiped off, your eyebrows will be the desired shade and shape. The pigment used to tint the eyebrows is slightly different than hair dye and has some qualities of henna. It not only dyes your eyebrow hair, but it also tints the surrounding skin in order to create more of a makeup/filled in effect. It lasts anywhere from 1-3 weeks on the skin and up to 30 days on the eyebrow hair. This is a great treatment for people who are nervous about getting. Microblading, but still want to try it out, people who are sick of filling in their eyebrows every day, but are nervous to go more permanent, or to cover blonde, or stubborn grey eyebrow.

How long does it last?

Several factors can affect exactly how much time you can go in between eyebrow-tinting treatments. The consensus among experts is that eyebrow tinting will last between three to eight weeks. Factors in how long your tinting will last include:

  • the type of dye
  • how hard you scrub your face
  • what type of makeup remover or face cleanser you use
  • sun exposure
  • sunscreen use
  • how quickly your hair grows and sheds.

Generally speaking, expect your tint to last about a month between touch-ups.

Brow Tinting Procedure

A well professional beautician who routinely does eyebrow tinting begins by having new clients fill out a medical and contraindication form to make sure an eyebrow tint will be a safe treatment for them.

Next, you can expect your technician to discuss what shade and type of dye will work best for your coloring and goals. But definitely, you could opt for your own desired color and shape too.

The Beautician will go over the shape with the client and make any changes that they would like. Once decided on the shape, will tweeze and cut any of the hairs outside the desired shape. And then apply the pigment to the eyebrow area within the shape and leave it on for 15 minutes. When it is wiped off, the client has perfectly shaped and filled in brows that will last for a few weeks! The appointment should take no longer than an hour.

Benefits of Eyebrow Tinting

The benefits to eyebrow tinting over microblading is that it is virtually painless (except for the tweezing). Microblading is not a horribly painful procedure either (especially because numbing is applied), but some people have different pain thresholds than others or are just nervous about it hurting.

Another benefit to eyebrow tinting is that it is more semi-permanent than filling in your eyebrows every day. Eyebrow tinting will last around 1-3 weeks so during that time you won’t have to fill in your brows! Eyebrow tinting creates a more filled in makeup/powder brow effect because we are not creating hair strokes like with microblading. If natural hair strokes are what you are looking for, then microblading might be better for you. Eyebrow tinting is also a fraction of the cost that microblading is so if you are not ready to make the investment to get your eyebrows micro-bladed, this might be a good option for you in the meantime. Keep in mind that eyebrow tinting also does not last anywhere near as long as microblading (which lasts around 1-3 years). So each service has its pros and cons.

Is it Safe??

Most people who try eyebrow tinting won’t experience any harmful side effects.

If you live in a state where eyebrow tinting is allowed, you can help protect your eyes by making sure your aesthetician uses a vegetable or henna-based dye.

Caring for your tinted brows

There’s nothing you absolutely must do to maintain your tinted brows. However, you can help the dye to last longer by using sunscreen and wearing hats during the day. Also, use a gentle cleanser around that area.

Alternatives to eyebrow tinting

Trying to dye your eyebrows with the same dye you use on your hair is not recommended. Neither is using any kind of permanent dye or temporary tattoo coloring on your eyebrows at home.

You can use over-the-counter cosmetic products like eyebrow pencils, brow pomade, brow mascara, brow gel, or brow powder to enhance, plump up, and define your brows at home. But the longer-lasting treatments should be left to the professionals.

Microblading another popular salon eyebrow enhancer, though it is a bit more invasive than tinting. Technicians will actually make tiny cuts with a special blade to insert pigment under the skin.

Should I get Eyebrow Tinting?

Honestly, it’s up to you! But if any of the above benefits sound good to you, I say go for it! It will wash away in about 1-3 weeks if you’re nervous and you won’t have to worry about filling in your brows for that time.

Make sure you do not have any allergies to red dye, latex, castor oil, antibiotic ointment. Also, make sure to disclose any and all allergies and medications to your artist prior to your appointment. This is a very low-risk treatment, but your artist can’t know what allergies you have if you do not tell them. Lastly, be sure to always follow the pre-treatment instructions for your appointment and the aftercare team for the best results!
